I am having fun!

I can't tell you how much the above picture (free from Wix) makes me sigh and almost purr with pleasure. The thought of a big comfy chair and a big pile of books to read at my leisure (and no clock in sight) is my idea of a truly fun day.
For years I've felt the judgement of others. "You need to get out more, Caprice!" "You're like an old lady, Caprice!" "Don't you want to go do something fun?" When I was in my 20's it was more challenging because I was in such a different place from my peers. While they were out barhopping, I was meditating and doing yoga. When they were going to concerts I was reading spiritual texts in an effort to understand the meaning of it all.
I realize this might sound like reverse judgment. I'm sure there is some of that in there. But the truth is, who cares what is fun for one person vs. another? To me, going to a concert might have some limited potential for fun. However, I'd reach my stimulation threshold long before anyone else there and have to either suck it up (and pay the next day) or leave early.
So here is a list of some of the things I consider fun that are more on the HSP side - I do enjoy rocking out to loud music sometimes and other raucous activities. :-)
- Meditating
- A deep conversation with a friend
- Walking my dog
- Sitting by a body of water
- Laying in the grass on a windy day, watching the sky sparkle through the shimmering leaves
- Reading
- Hot baths (not in the summer)
- Cooking, alone or with one close friend or my husband
- Zentangle
- Visiting a museum or historical site
You'll notice these are peaceful, calm activities. I feel like because of my high sensitivity my baseline cortisol levels are constantly elevated so it's a continual effort to bring them back down. For years I felt bad about myself and even bought into the story that I did not know how to have fun and thus I was not a fun person. I'm so thankful to have figured out that this is simply not true and that there are many others like me.
I'd love to hear others' idea of fun that doesn't fit the usual definition. Please share!
Blessings!
